Solar powered libraries cutting Bristol’s carbon emissions

Bristol City Council continues efforts to reduce carbon emissions with the completion of solar and battery storage projects across four new sites.

Solar panels and batteries have been fitted to four libraries across the city improving the energy efficiency of the buildings, reducing their running costs, and significantly reducing the carbon emissions from library operations.

The energy generated by the equipment installed at Marksbury Road, Wick Road, Horfield and Westbury libraries will meet around 40 per cent of the on-site electricity usage, and the estimated combined generation of 13,228 kWh could save a total of 3,060kg of carbon annually.

The battery storage enables the solar panels to contribute to power needs overnight such as out of hours operations, security lighting and IT Servers.

Councillor Nicola Beech, Cabinet Member of Climate, Environment, Energy and Waste said: “Bristol’s libraries are at the heart of our communities and it’s brilliant to be able to ensure that these vital buildings are fit for the future and supporting our aims of reducing carbon, whilst also making sure that their running costs are reduced.

“These are exciting projects that will use new technology to significantly cut emissions from our corporate estate and ensure that the council remains on track to be a carbon neutral organisation by 2025.”

The equipment installed on the four library roofs, and also on a newly refurbished children’s home in Whitchurch, was carried over from previous projects.

This solar scheme for libraries follows the success of the solar installation at Bristol’s Central Library in recent years – around 4kW of solar power reduces the building’s emissions by around 3,350kg of carbon each year.
