Operational note: Prince Street Bridge closed to vehicles on Friday 27 May

Prince Street Bridge closed on Friday 27 May to lift heavy machinery out of the bridge.

Bristol City Council needs to close part of Prince Street Bridge on Friday 27 May so it can lift two pieces of heavy machinery out of the bridge.

Pedestrian and cycle access will be maintained, while cars and other road traffic will be diverted to Redcliffe Bridge.

A spokesperson for Bristol City Council said: “We urgently need to repair a mechanism that allows Prince Street Bridge to swing open.

“Tomorrow’s work will involve lifting the hemisphere and piston out of the centre press. To do this we need to take part of the decking on the cycle path up, so need to move both cyclists and pedestrians over to the road for the day.

“Once both pieces of kit are safely out, we will put the decking back and reopen the full bridge.

“Thank you for bearing with us while we work to bring this heritage bridge back into full use for our boating community.”

Prince Street Bridge is a Grade II listed iron swing bridge across Bristol Harbour. It carries a road from Prince Street to Wapping Road and was built in 1879.
