Second round of free Bristol Girls Can sports sessions up for grabs

There are just a couple of weeks left to make the most of hundreds of free sports sessions, which are up for grabs as part of an ongoing campaign to inspire more Bristol women to get out there and enjoy exercise.

The team behind the Bristol Girls Can campaign has just 400 vouchers left for free sport sessions at leisure centres across the city, ranging from Body Pump to Insanity, Boxfit, Spin, Sway Dance, badminton and netball.

This second round of vouchers gives people the opportunity to try a new exercise class at one of the six SLM leisure centres in Bristol - Everyone Active - Horfield Leisure Centre, Henbury Leisure Centre, St Pauls Community Sports Academy, Easton Leisure Centre, Kingdown Leisure Centre and Bristol South Swimming pool – or at Parkwood Leisure Hengrove centre.

The scheme is aimed at women who have never visited the leisure centres or those who have not been in a while.

Councillor Daniella Radice, Assistant Mayor for Neighbourhoods with responsibility for sport, said: “Our last free sports vouchers giveaway was a huge success, with hundreds of people taking the opportunity to try out a free sports session at one of the city’s leisure centres.

“If you haven’t already taken advantage of the scheme, I’d recommend signing up for your free session.  Exercise not only boosts health and wellbeing, it is also a great way to meet people and make new friends too.”

The Bristol Girls Can campaign, which was launched last March, followed the success of Sport England’s This Girl Can campaign.

Supported by Bristol City Council and Sport England, the campaign aims to bring women from across the city together to show the world that Bristol Girls Can.

According to Sport England statistics, around 38.3% of women in Bristol undertake 1x30mins activity per week, with more than 60% of women currently not taking part in any regular activity.

Bristol Girls Can is a celebration of active women who are doing their thing no matter how well they do it, how they look or even how red their face goes.

It is aimed at inspiring women to wiggle, jiggle and prove that judgement is a barrier which can be overcome.  The message is clear: Do your thing, don’t let anything stand in your way.

To apply for a free voucher, people are being asked to e-mail sport@bristol.gov.uk with the following details: name, address, contact number, date of birth and chosen leisure centre.

Participants will be issued with a unique voucher.  The vouchers expire on Monday 29 February.
