The Childcare Development and Sustainability Service (CDSS) strategy will make sure families, children and young people can access the ongoing, high-quality, affordable, and safe childcare that they need.
The approach forms part of the council’s commitment to give children the best possible start in life, which is supported by this service in providing childcare available from the early years.
Alison Hurley, Director Education and Skills said: “The challenges of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic are having a sustained impact on childcare providers in the city and the development of this strategy comes at a crucial time. The importance of the quality of early education and childcare has long been recognised. In particular early education can help disadvantaged children to close the gap in educational achievements with their less disadvantaged peers, but only if it is of good quality. This draft strategy outlines how we will commission a service to make sure that we continue to deliver what we need.
“We hope that the people of Bristol, particularly parents and carers, childcare providers and organisations that develop and support childcare will share their views on it.”
The current contract with the existing external provider of the Childcare Development and Sustainability Service ends in December 2021. The council is proposing to commission a similar city-wide service delivered by one external provider for one year with the option to extend for a further year. The current arrangement was shaped by feedback from a public consultation in 2018. To provide consistency for childcare providers the council is not proposing significant changes.
Any comments received from the consultation will be considered before a final strategy is published.
The consultation closes this weekend 25 April 2021.
